-- www.vitac.com >>> good morning to you. i sure hope you're keeping dry somewhere. i'm carol costello. thank you so much for being with us. we begin this morning with hurricane sandy, within hours expected to explode into this superstorm. most of us have never season anything like it in our lifetime. already huge, tropical storm force winds spanning a width of nearly 1,000 mimes. it's aiming at the heart of the east coast, the most heavily populated corridor in the country. 50 million people are expected to feel the effects. hundreds of thousands are now under evacuation orders. fema predicts damage costs of about $3 billion just for wind damage alone. heavy rains or snow, storm surges, widespread flooding across the region depending upon where you live. we're also following a drama unfolding out to sea. a rescue is under way for the crew of the hms bounty, the ship built for the hollywood movie "mutiny on bounty." unbelievable. we'll have more on that es cue in just a minute. let's begin with the first reports of power outages. they're already rolling in. see meteorologist rob marcia

these photos of the victims. batman's name is carol stuart -- is carol stuart iii. she managed to jump to safety from a second-floor window. her sister barbara hopkins says that nancy was the primary care giver of the children and she believes she died trying to save lives. she lost her son. family members say a 7-year-old also perished in the fire. fire officials say the victims were found on the second floor in a back bedroom. >> you could see the fire coming out of the window. and they were trying to get them out the best they can, but it was rolling. >> two firefighters were badly hurt during the inferno. 1 fell through the basement and landed on top of another firefighter. both were taken to the burn center with non life-threatening issues -- injuries. fire officials say there is no evidence to support arson. wbal-tv 11 news. >> meanwhile, three more city firefighters are recovering from injuries they sustained from this fire. this is what the home looks like now in southeast baltimore. we're told all the firefighters are in stable condition, dealing with burns to hands and faces.

in it our panel. we have carol roth, mike the pento, and our own rick santelli. rick, what are you seeing in terms of stocks, money moving out of equities and some moving into fixed income? >> many traders think this is going to be a rough and bumpy earnings season, a rough and bumpy guidance. they believe that the stock market has a bit of immortality thanks to the fed. in terms of interest rates, they believe if the actual data continues to improve in a real way, like some of the housing data points, some of the ism points, that we will indeed see an appropriate rise in rates. that threshold seems to be about 2%. so we're about 20 basis points away. they do see some optimism though. >> is that why you think the yields have gone up as much as they have in the last week for the treasuries? especially the ten-year. >> i think it's 50% year up and 50% the better data is reflected by higher equities. >> all right. keith, what about the -- you know, we seem to be feeling optimism here. we have the housing start number better than expected. housing has been a bright spot. the financials have h

to do? i can't believe when i am standing backstage listening to carol say those things about me, i want you to know, by the way, the cameras in january, i want you to see, i thought i had figured out a way to make teaching a. make it a tv job. i could be a teacher and her tv job. they left in january and by was a real teacher. i went listening to ms. carroll say those things to me. the greatest compliment at the end of the year, i had gone through this journey with her and i am reading yours, she asked me what i consider coming back, i thought was the greatest compliment, but i said to her at my age i am not sure i want to care this much about anything. i just want to thank you all for being here. and writing this book, seeing a lot of teachers, i accept your apology. everywhere i go people are going i accept. i realize, i did do a year. i stayed the year, no small feat for those of you -- there are a lot of teachers here but it is 181 days, not that i was counting, but the funny thing about being a teacher is snow days are bad. remember when snow days are good? you lose your momentum.

's go to alexandria, virginia, right now, not far from washington, d.c., along the potomac river. carol costello is riding out the storm there. what's it like, carol? >> reporter: well, wolf, it's interesting because it doesn't feel like a hurricane. but it sure acts like one. it doesn't feel like a hurricane because it's so darn cold. the cold just goes right through you because it's so damp and wet out here. but every so often, it certainly acts like a hurricane. the rain will come down harder and there will be terrific wind gusts. wind gusts clocked at about 65 miles per hour at reagan national airport right now. we have sustained winds anywhere between 20 and 30 miles per hour. i'm standing here in old town alexandria, a place you well know, wolf. standing right along the banks of the potomac river. the big worry is there will be a big storm surge out in the atlantic. since this is in a tidal basin, that will push the waters of the potomac up and maybe out of their banks. frankly the people here in old town are used to that. as you can see, there are dozens and dozens of businesses

in the presidential election here. just on friday, i spoke with carol hunter. she is the senior news director of the paper. she very much so agreed with me. iowa up for grabs. >> it's pretty much like ohio in that it's very much a toss-up state. all the polls are showing it pretty much dead even. there's a rasmussen report out that has them both at 48%. the rolling averages are all within the margin of error. it's just going to be close, close, close, right down to the wire. and how precious those six electoral votes are just shows how close the entire national campaign is. >> mitt romney spent saturday focusing on florida. he had three, count 'em, three separate events there just yesterday. today romney is in ohio with vice presidential candidate paul ryan. and in florida, romney kept hammering home his message of a failed passed four years. >> he's asked what he's going do to get this economy going. we've had four debates, three presidential, one vice presidential. have you heard him lay out a plan yet as to what he's going to do to get this economy going? >> no! >> he wants four more years
